How To Use Cones In Soccer Training

It’s time to learn about the tools of the trade, and in soccer, there are many different types of cones used for various purposes, so let’s take a quick look at how each one is used and what it’s good for.

How To Use Cones In Soccer Training

  • Targets Cone: These cones typically have orange or yellow tops set up in rows on the field with 10 yards between each cone. They’re used to mark out different yardage points on the field, such as penalty areas and half-fields.

  • Training Cone: These cones have green tops and may or may not come in three sets (a group). They are used for training purposes – often to help the players learn how to position themselves on the field or even have a fun soccer game.

  • Markers: These cones – also known as “pips” or “pins” – are typically made of plastic and have colored bands on them placed at different yardage points around the field. They’re set up in groups of three (a group) in a diamond shape around where the ball will be played so that it’s clear where to Control and Run.

  • Control Cone: These cones are typically made of some metal and are used to mark out the boundaries of the Penalty Area (also known as the “D” area). They’re usually set up in four triangles.

  • Free Play Cone: These cones are generally white with a blacktop. They’re often set up in corners or yardage markers around the field but can be placed anywhere on the field that you want. This is a great cone for quick distance measurements to give players and coaches an approximate distance from where they need to play their passes, crosses, or runs.

As you can see, many different types of cones can be used for all kinds of purposes. But there is one thing they all have in common, and that’s the fact that they can be used to create an element of fun and excitement by changing up your drills.
