These soccer drills will help you improve as a player. Some exercises target specific skill sets like ball control, and others are better for developing your overall athleticism.
Ball Handling Drill – #1 Soccer Drills For Beginners
For this exercise, start with the ball at your feet and get in a good defensive stance. Face the net and hold out your hands to form a W shape behind you with the ball in the middle of your palms. Now drop the ball below your waist and pop it up with both feet. This drill is great for improving touch and ball control.
Putter Drill – #2 Soccer Drills For Beginners
For this drill, you’ll need a partner who will feed you balls to practice volleying. Start with your partner about 5 yards away from you and facing the opposite direction. Stand with your legs spread shoulder-width apart and get in a good defensive stance as if you were defending someone on the field. When your partner throws the ball, volley it with your left hand away from you and towards the endzone. You can also hit the ball to the ground in front of you for a good transition drill.
Teamwork Drill – #3 Soccer Drills For Beginners
One of the most challenging aspects of playing soccer is team play. For this drill, start with 10 players at one end of the field and practice passing and receiving. Get in a good defensive stance and rotate your feet to practice angle passing. Once you’ve learned how to pass and receive, move the play along. Start with 10 players at each end of the field, moving passes and receiving through a series of 2-on-1s. As you improve at these drills, increase the number of players you have at each end of the field.
Jump Rope Drill – #4 Soccer Drills For Beginners
For this drill, you’ll need a jump rope. Start with your feet about 3 feet apart and hands at your sides. Jump in and out of the rope, making sure to turn your foot each time to keep control of it. This jump rope drill is great for improving your footwork and athleticism.
Staggered Defender Drill – #5 Soccer Drills For Beginners
For this drill, you’ll need three cones or other markers. One person will serve as the striker, and two others will stand on either side of the net. The striker will start a few yards behind one of the defenders and try to score past them. As soon as they contact the ball, that defender sprints to take on the next striker coming in (you can have more than one striker at a time), while the first defender joins their partner on defense. This drill is great for improving your athleticism and footwork.
Free Throw Drill
For this exercise, start with your feet spread shoulder-width apart and facing the net. Face the backboard or a target and put your right hand on it. Pick up the ball in your left hand and dribble towards the backboard. As you get closer, turn your hips and touch the ball with your right hand. The ball should bounce off the backboard and into the net. This drill is great for practicing your shooting accuracy and touch.
Heading Drill
Stand a few feet away from a wall or net and turn to face it. With your hands at your side, start running towards it as fast as you can. At the last second, jump up and head the ball towards the target before landing on both feet. This is a great drill for improving your quickness and athleticism.
